Description including Unit Aims

This unit is designed to enable students to understand and use appropriate counselling skills within their counselling contexts and to reflect on their practice. Experience from counselling practice will inform the learning within this unit.

Aims:

This unit aims to equip students with the core skills of counselling and supervision and the ability to apply them professionally in a variety of counselling contexts.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Successful completion of this unit will enable a student to:

  • Demonstrate their understanding of how counselling theory is applied in practice.
  • Demonstrate and evaluate their effective use of counselling skills
  • Analyse the impact of their use of counselling skills
  • Demonstrate their ability to use and learn from supervision within their role as counsellor

Assessment Information

Assessment through portfolio (equivalent to 4,000 word essay) designed to demonstrate stated outcomes and consisting of:

  • Videotape and analysis to demonstrate application of theory to practice, effective use of skills and critical questioning of professional assumptions.
  • Peer and tutor feedback documents
  • Personal reflection on personal and professional development to show personal learning
  • External supervisor’s report to show level of competency and ability to learn through supervision.
  • Evidence of 40 hours counselling practice
