Description including Unit Aims
This unit will explore and assess students' ability to counsel effectively and safely, to reflect on and develop their understanding of their personal and professional development and to use supervision appropriately in a range of settings.
Aims:
This unit aims to equip students to counsel professionally and ethically and to use supervision appropriately in a range of counselling settings.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Successful completion of this unit will enable a student to:
- Operate professionally and ethically as a counsellor
- Monitor and continue professional development
- Extend personal development to optimise their professional role
Teaching Information
- Tutor input and experiential exercises
- Small group supervision of practice
- Small groups for personal and professional development
(Reflection on experiences from counselling placement will be present within all teaching in this unit)
Assessment Information
Assessment through portfolio (equivalent to 4,000 word essay) designed to demonstrate stated outcomes and consisting of:
- Audiotape and analysis to demonstrate application of theory to practice, effective use of skills and critical questioning of professional assumptions.
- Peer and tutor feedback documents
- Personal reflection on personal and professional development to show personal learning and commitment to continuing professional development.
- Internal and external supervisors’ report to show level of competency and ability to learn through supervision.
- Evidence of a further 80 hours counselling practice (120 hours over two years).
