Drawing from the studio model in life classes formed the basis of the academic tradition in Renaissance and later painting and sculpture, founded on the revival of practices originating in classical Greece and Rome. This unit explores practically and theoretically the principles of life drawing initially developed in the studios and academies of Renaissance Italy and carried on subsequently as one of the primary formative disciplines in fine art practice in the western artistic tradition. Studio sessions develop awareness of the purposes and practice-based learning traditional skills and techniques taught in academies and ateliers. Classes may be consolidated by studying historical drawing techniques from original works by Renaissance and later artists in the major Florentine collections. This unit is offered through the History of Art Study Abroad Programme in Florence.
