This unit examines the politics of visual culture in the United States in relation to the complext process of modernization between c.1900 and the nation&�s entry into the Second World War in 1941. It focuses particularly on the way pictorial practices (including painting, photography, and magazine illustration) were used to articulate critques of the culture and values of the dominant social groups, as defined in terms of class, gender, and race. In the process, the unit considers a wide range of objects from murals in post offices to avant-garde experiments.
