This thematically organised unit will explore and examine dialogues and collaborations that took place between artistic and scientific communities in (primarily) Britain, c. 1700-1800. The analysis of cultural traffic between artistic production and scientific imagery and ideas will locate visual imagery within a broad cultural, intellectual and social framework. Particular attention will be paid to the themes of art and anotomy (including wax anatomical models), physiognomy, the natural sciences and the landscape genre, art and industry and the optical technologies. Artists to be studied will include William Hogarth, George Stubbs, Henry Fuseli, Joseph Wright and William Hodges, amongst others. This module does not presuppose and scientific knowledge.
