Description including Unit Aims

This collaborative study unit will offer History of Art MA students an unprecedented opportunity to research and catalogue objects at first hand from the collections of the Holburne Museum in Bath and publish their results online as part of the Your Paintings project, a national collaboration between public museum collections, the Public Catalogue Foundation and the BBC. The results of students' catalogue research for the museum will be further developed into an extended research essay under supervision of the unit tutor. On successful completion of this unit students will have developed an enhanced critical understanding of the collections research and interpretation practices of the partner institution and the capacity to analyse and evaluate them. They will also have acquired understanding of and ability to practice the skills required for the cataloguing and interpretation of objects in public museum collections.

Aims:

This unit will enable students to collaborate closely with an approved partner institution under the guidance of one of the academic team. It will foster understanding of the practices of the partner institution, and seeks to develop the capacity to relate these to cognate academic principles and practices. It will develop a range of appropriate practice-based skills relevant to the concerns of the collaborating organisation. It will encourage students to reflect critically upon their learning outside the academy, and to articulate their reflections in a sustained piece of writing.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit, students should have developed an enhanced critical understanding of the practices of the partner institution, and the capacity to analyse and evaluate these in relation to the concerns of their discipline. The student will have developed a range of appropriate practice-based skills through the collaboration with the outside organisation. Students will have produced a reflective 5 000 word essay, or other appropriate document, as agreed with the supervising member of the academic team.

Teaching Information

The unit will be taught through a combination of sessions with the partner institution, meetings with members of the academic team, guided reading, and preparation of the assignment.

Assessment Information

One 5 000 word essay or appropriate document agreed by supervising member of the academic team (eg, a reflective log detailing their practices when working with collaborating institution).
