This unit will look at how migration to Italy has changed Italy and Italian culture. It will look at a variety of cultural forms (literature, film, music) that trace the passage of Italy towards a multicultural nation. It will also look at both positive and negative responses to these changes.
Aims:
Through the analysis of a number of key texts, this unit aims to introduce students to the phenomenon of contemporary migration to Italy. Emphasis will be placed on the development of a historical understanding of the phenomenon in relation to Italy's past as a country of emigrants and as a colonial power. The unit will introduce students to debates around the reception of Islam, race and nation, and migration law through which ideas of Italy as a multicultural space are negotiated.
Students will gain an understanding of one of the major social factors in contemporary Italy. They will attain a knowledge of how this links to aspects of Italy's past, and an appreciation of the range of concerns that it generates in the present. They will improve their ability to analyse literary and film texts relating them in an appropriate manner to the contexts in which they are produced and received.
The unit will be delivered through tutor-led seminar based teaching.
