The focus of the unit is on real life issues relating to families - their creation, support and breakdown. These are explored through socio-legal and sociological research, statutes and case law. An overarching theme is the role of the law in supporting equality between men and women and protecting weaker family members. The topics examined include: - becoming a parent in law; parental responsibilities and children's rights; resolving disputes between parents; state intervention in family life to protect children; marriage and civil partnership; the ending of formal relationships through nullity, divorce or dissolution, and the division of the family's property; the financial support of children by parents; legal protection against domestic violence.
