This unit will analyse the law and policy in relation to public health. Ensuring public health is an important task for the state, as evidenced by recent discussions about smoking, obesity etc, but dating back much further to attempts made to control the spread of infectious disease. However, there has been relatively little sustained academic analysis of the function which is performed by law in this policy context, and this unit will seek to redress this gap. The unit will be taught with reference to the following key themes: health, individual freedom and responsibility, state responsibility, risk and trust.
