The aims of this unit are to provide knowledge and understanding of the strategic role of human resources in modern organisations. It starts by providing students with frameworks and models for linking HR and business strategy such as the balanced scorecard. The latest developments in key HR areas such as personnel selection, training and development, performance management, employee motivation and job design are discussed in depth. In the analysis of real life case studies, students are expected to diagnose HRM problems using the various frameworks, tools and techniques, and recommend appropriate courses of action. Finally the unit looks at the changing role of the HR department.
