In this unit, we take a pan-historical approach to the ways in which text and music interact in western music, from word painting, affective text setting and musical reflections of verbal rhetoric, to texts as inspiration for non-vocal music. To what extent, and in what ways does musical language have non-verbal meaning, and how is this affected by the addition of words? Classes will be a mixture of formal lectures, student presentations and discussion, with the repertoire ranging from medieval chant to contemporary music.
