Description including Unit Aims

The nineteenth century is perhaps the most diverse of any period for the study of music and its development. Nowhere is this truer than in the great choral movement that spans the century, from the Bach revival in Germany in the early 1800s, to the choral works of composers such as Elgar and Faur, that point towards the twentieth century. In this unit we will explore the rise of the choral movement in England, France and Germany, contextualizing the music with the significant changes in social and cultural values, and investigating the landmark events, the composers, and the musicians that define the century. Individual research topics will cover areas such as cathedral music, the Three Choirs Festival, oratorios, madrigals rediscovered, plainsong revived, requiems, and the choral giants of the nineteenth century: Brahms, Mendelssohn, Faur and Elgar, to name but a few.
