This unit will comprise 92 lectures and a series of 14-16 advanced topic seminars. From the latter, students will select, usually 3, advanced topics for self-directed exploration, in depth. At the start of the year, the students will be required to present the key results of their industrial year at a scheduled assessment poster session (in addition to a formal written dissertation). A novel element of the unit is a 'grant proposal' writing project. Students embark upon the research of an agreed topic and prepare a research grant proposal in a Research Council style format. The didatic lecture component of the unit is identical to that studied by the level 3 BSc Pharmacology students. the advanced topic teaching and associated self-directed work and the grant proposal project elements are unique to this unit. The emphasis of the unit is on ion channel and receptor pharmacology, cell signalling mechanisms and cardiovascular pharmacology.
