Description including Unit Aims

This unit introduces comtemporary research on the relationship amongst language, thought, and non-verbal communicative behaviours. One of the foci of the unit is the "hypothesis" of "linguistic relativity of thought", namely, the hypothesis that our thought is influenced by the language we speak. Evidence for and against this hypothesis will be discussed. The other focus is gestures that spontaneously accompany speech. The roles gesture plays in both thinking and communication will be discussed.
