This unit explores Czech prose fiction, drama and verse written since the post-Stalinist Thaw. Students will be encouraged, with guidance to choose writers which reflect their own interests, though certain key writers, including Kundera and Hrabal, will normally be represented. The unit will feature works published under and after the fall of Communism, including imigri works, and will reflect in particular on the relationship between literature and politics and attempts to sever it, and on the apparent decline in the importance of literature in the post-Changes period.
