An optional unit taught in the second teaching block, which introduces students to the treatment of World War II and of the recent wars in Afghanistan and Chechnya in Soviet and Russian film. Through the study of the films, students will gain a different perspective onto the wars than presented in the mass media. They will learn to differentiate between official and unofficial viewpoints, and understand the East/West divide that is of paramount significance for Russian culture. Teaching will be in small groups for two hours per week in the first teaching block. The unit will be assessed by an essay (75%) and a seminar presentation (25%).
