"Show me how you play and I will show you who you are," wrote Uruguayan Eduardo Galeano. This unit introduces students to the sociology of sport, centring on how wider social structures have shaped what we play, how we play and what it means when we do so. Key themes cutting across sports will include the shift from pre modern to modern sports, the historical and geographical spread of modern sports, the relationship between sport and economic, political and military institutions and the cultural creation and meanings of sporting narratives and icons. The course will also focus on a number of particular sports to provide empirical and historical depth. These will include: football and its variants, cricket and baseball, boxing and martial arts, golf and extreme sports.
