This unit considers the theoretical and empirical study of forms of political and social movement activism. It begins by addressing the thesis that there is a crisis of representative politics in contemporary established democracies, before outlining key theories of political participation and the challenges that social movements present to understandings of the political and citizens& participation. It then goes on to consider the emergence of new forms of political action and social movements. The unit concludes by considering the nature of democratic engagement in light of contemporary sociological theorising concerning the nature of politics and relationships between citizens and citizens and the state.
