From the specialised and detailed study of the gardens of a particular period, students will refine their understanding of how garden designs reflect and express prevailing ideas of identity and the construction of national values. The Unit will develop interpretational skills by examining specific sites in relation to how their owners and designers pursued specific aesthetic and ideological purposes in their formation. By studying a topic in depth the Unit contributes to the development of garden history research skills in preparation for dissertation work.
