Description including Unit Aims

This Unit will study the gardens created in the Twentieth Century and range chronologically from 1918 to the present day. Although conceived as a discrete Unit, it is a natural progression from the optional Unit on the Edwardian Garden. The prime concentration is on the designers beginning with Clough Williams-Ellis and ending with HRH The Prince of Wales. Other garden practitioners include: Christopher Tunnard, David Hicks, Russell Page, Sylvia Crowe, Rosemary Verey and Sir Roy Strong. The main focus is in the interaction of art and architecture with the garden, seen particularly through the work of Geoffrey Jellicoe, Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson, and in the sculpture gardens by Barbara Hepworth, Elizabeth Frink and Ian Hamilton Finlay. There will also be an emphasis on the more utilitarian landscaping of New Towns, estates and urban spaces.
