This unit provides comprehensive coverage of modern analytical chemistry, including the fundamental considerations involved in the design of analytical protocols and the theory and practical aspects of the use of modern analytical chemical techniques to study a variety of sample types, ranging from biological and environmental materials to industrial chemicals and drugs of abuse. Specific instrumental methods covered include, advanced gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, hyphenated methods and optical spectroscopy. Coverage of data analysis emphasises the use of chemometric approaches. The unit includes workshops and practical sessions to develop advanced practical and interpretive skills.
