Description including Unit Aims
This is an introductory unit to the resources and skills of independent reading, translation and interpretation of Greek texts. The unit concentrates on reading 600-800 lines of Greek prose, with emphasis on grammatical and syntactical analysis and relating these to the skills of practical criticism. This unit also introduces students to the use of advanced dictionaries and commentaries in translating and interpreting texts.
Aims:
Upon conclusion of this unit students will have developed knowledge of the issues raised in relation to the texts studied and their interpretation. They will have developed an appreciation of the literary style of the texts studied and improved their fluency in reading and translating of Greek.
Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit students should have:
- have improved their language skills in reading and translating ancient Greek texts, both at sight and with the aid of grammar and lexicon
- be able to identify and analyse an increased range of Greek syntactical structures
- have improved their ability to use dictionary, grammar and commentary to produce practical criticism of a passage of Greek.
- have been encouraged to use secondary literature in the production of independent interpretations.
- have had the opportunity to develop communication skills in both oral and written presentations, discussions and written assignments.

Assessment Information
- 1 assessment exercise in practical criticism of approx. 3000 words of a chosen piece of text 35-40 lines in length, with guidance questions from unit director (50%)
- 2 class tests, one of unseen translation and grammatical/syntactical knowledge and one of set text translation and commentary on one piece of text 20 lines in length, to be counted equally (50%).
