Description including Unit Aims

What makes me who I am? Is it my actions? My intentions? The way I feel about myself? What others think of me? These are essential questions for thinking about morality, mental health, and happiness. They&re also hot topics in philosophy and cultural theory at present, but rather than engaging the contemporary debate head-on, in this unit we&ll take these questions as an excuse to think and talk about the &heroic& characters of Greek and Roman tragedy and epic. We&ll use selective readings from ancient and modern philosophy, critical, and literary theory to further highlight the issues under discussion. Finally, we&ll consider how reception of classical fiction has been used to elaborate modern models of selfhood.
