This unit will introduce students to the advanced criticism of Homer. The focus will be predominantly literary: the myths, themes, characters and distinctive qualities of the poems, and the strengths of various critical approaches. The ancient and modern reception of Homer will be kept constantly in view. Other subjects, such as the Bronze Age background, the Homeric Question (the genesis and preservation of the poems), comparative oral poetry, and the historical context of the poems& composition, will not however be ignored. Students will be invited to consider why in some critics& estimation the first poet of the Western tradition is also the greatest.
