This unit introduces students to aspects of recent critical theory within an interdisciplinary framework. Opening sessions outline the importance and worth of critical theory in the arts and humanities; subsequent weeks introduce a variety of specific writers and areas of enquiry, dependent on teaching staff specialisms. Throughout the ten weeks of the unit, staff-led lectures and seminars are alternated with student-led discussion sessions which are centred on particular set readings. The unit is primarily intended for MA students but research students are also welcome to attend, as are students not taking the unit for credit. Topics and authors discussed may include: Bakhtin, Barthes and Semiotics, Bourdieu and Cultural Studies, Derrida and Deconstruction, Foucault, Marxism and the Frankfurt School, Postmodern Theories of Gender, Postcolonialism, Posthumanism, Psychoanalysis.
