Description including Unit Aims

The unit is one of the options designated as covering Production Skills. As with the others in this category, it is designed to offer reinforcement in one skill area to build on the general understanding developed through mandatory units and to enable the acquisition of a base of skills so collaborative production of the dissertation projects is possible at the appropriate professional standards. The unit seeks to develop an awareness of design both as a practical discipline and an aesthetic and cultural dimension of screen material. Through structured exercises based on contact with a range of professional practitioners, the unit will develop understanding of issues in design and enable students to acquire basic competency in the design process. This will enable those involved to undertake design roles on dissertation projects, as well as to develop their awareness of design in screen material, and of the way the logistics of design can shape a project.
