This course will provide an overview of the development of the subject from the Ancient Greeks through to the work of Keynes. The first term will cover the period up to the early 19th Century, beginning with Aristotle and ending with Malthus. The second term begins with Ricardo and covers the period to Keynes. We will mainly focus on reading extracts from primary texts but we also pay some attention to the (often very contested) reception of these works and to the historical situations from which these works arose.
