This unit will complement &Court and City 1: Late Medieval English Literary Responses&, but is also free-standing. Students will study the literature of the period commonly understood to constitute the Renaissance in England, using a variety of texts and contexts including those outside the canon generally studied by undergraduates. There will be a particular focus on the court and the city as complementary textual environments. Obvious areas for exploration will include: the reception of Chaucer and his continental Renaissance contemporaries; the positioning of a distinctive English vernacular literary culture in Europe; the development of English drama in playhouse and court contexts; responses to, and formulations of authority; satire. Authors who will be covered might include: Skelton, Wyatt, Surrey, Spenser, Rastell, Heywood, Greene, Middleton, Forde, Jonson, Sir David Lindsay and Henry VIII.
