The global environmental crisis demands more constructive engagements between human and physical scientists, however existing disciplines and conceptual approaches are often challenged by the need to develop new science/society relationships. This unit introduces students to current debates and key conceptual approaches in areas such as postcolonial ecology, science and technology studies, environmental governance and eco-governmentality. These literatures situate conceptual understandings of the relationships between human activity and the physical environment in historical, social and cultural contexts, draw attention to the uneven politics of access to, and control over, natural resources, and explore the implications of social theory for critical understandings of relationships between human and physical sciences.
