This unit introduces students to main works, theories and issues of twentieth-century art.Topics to be covered include: the rise of Modernism as a theory and a practice; Matisse and Expressionism; Cubism and its relation to theories of autonomy; the emergence of abstract art and its theory; art and the Russian revolution; Dada and the idea of anti-art; Surrealism and the politics of liberation' Abstract Expressionism in America; Pop art and consumerism; Conceptual art; the end of art and its theory.
