Description including Unit Aims

This unit will concentrate on the career and work of a single artist, Edouard Manet. It will consider biographies of him, concentrating on how the formation of these biographies may have been predicated on viws of him as an artist. Above all, however, the unit will seek to examine seriously Manet's artistic production as a whole. His relatively neglected graphic work will be investigated, as well as the very famous paintings such as Olympia and A Bar at the Folies-Bergere. The artist will also be contextualised, both in relation to artistic movements of his day, and in terms of historical developments (many of which he addressed, obliquely or otherwise) in his art.

Aims:

This final-year unit builds upon themes and material covered in several different second-level units, and allows the students to work in depth on a more focussed body of material.

The unit will consider the full range of Manet’s work (drawings and prints as well as less familiar paintings alongside the famous images). It will also investigate a variety of Manet scholarship, examining different approaches to the artist’s oeuvre with a view to establishing its pertinence and significance. Manet’s work in connection with Realism and (particularly) Modernism will also be studied to establish the artist’s significance in the formation of these categories.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the unit, students should have acquired:

  • familiarity with the full range of Manet’s work
  • a good grounding in the interpretational strategies used in connection with Manet’s art
  • further understanding of the foundations of Modernist art

Through the programme of seminars based on class discussion of prepared reading and student presentations, students should have developed their capacity to carry out guided and independent research, to summarise and present, in oral form, complex arguments and/or information with due attention to the deployment of relevant visual examples. The essays and the written examination should have enabled students to develop a similar capacity for research and for organisation of material, with due attention to the deployment of sources and examples, as appropriate to written presentation.
