This unit charts the development of the theatre of Federico Garcma Lorca from his first play, El maleficio de la mariposa (1920) to his last La casa de Bernarda Alba (1936) completed just months before his murder by Spanish Nationalists at the beginning of the Civil War. Looking at a wide selection of his plays, the unit explores key themes in Lorca s theatre: different conceptions of poetry in the theatre; the role of the imagination in the life of the individual; the conflict between the individual and society; the nature of love and its links to frustration and suffering.
