Description including Unit Aims

This unit gives students the option to improve their skills and proficiency in languages which will be of use in their historical research. Students can follow pathways at advanced, intermediate and beginners levels.

Aims:

The unit will improve students' Spanish language skills particularly in the areas of reading and writing. Particular attention will be given to reading and paraphrasing historical texts, and giving students the strengths and confidence to engage with historical texts in the target language.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will learn to study historical texts in detail in the target language. They will become confident in reading, translating and understanding complex texts from a variety of chronological periods. They will read and write more fluently and accurately.

Teaching Information

All teaching will be done through seminar discussions and the marking and discussion of formative assessments. The unit will be taught fortnightly across both TB1 and TB2.

Assessment Information

A 3-hour examination consisting of a commentary on a historical text in Spanish (250 words) (30%), a translation of historical text from Spanish to English (250 words) (30%) and composition on historical subject (40%) in Spanish.
