This unit gives students the option to improve their skills and proficiency in languages which will be of use in their historical research. Students can follow pathways at advanced, intermediate and beginners levels.
Aims:
The unit will improve students' Portuguese language skills particularly in the areas of reading and writing. Particular attention will be given to reading and paraphrasing historical texts, and giving students the strengths and confidence to engage with historical texts in the target language.
Students will learn to study historical texts in detail in the target language. They will become confident in reading, translating and understanding complex texts from a variety of chronological periods. They will read and write more fluently and accurately.
All teaching will be done through seminar discussions and the marking and discussion of formative assessments. The unit will be taught fortnightly across both TB1 and TB2.
A 3-hour examination consisting of a commentary on a short historical text (250 words) in Portuguese (50%), and a translation from Portuguese to English of a historical text (250 words) (50%).
