Description including Unit Aims

This unit is dedicated to various theoretical questions and new approaches to the writing and representation of contemporary history. The seminars examine the definition and identity of contemporary history and range widely across subject matter, geography and approach. The emphasis is on broad-ranging discussion of historical issues, in order to encourage students to place the more detailed material they encounter in their options in a wider context. Key themes running through the different sessions include a consideration not only of how historians have striven to understand and compose contemporary history, but how they have attended to their approach to history in so doing.
