Description including Unit Aims

This unit provides students with an overview of the growth, development and health needs of all children. Health is looked at in children during the course of normal development, and in children that are unwell or have chronic or disabling conditions. In considering these topics reference is made to the social aspects of child health and to the role of the health services in identifying and meeting the needs of children.

The unit aims to provide a dynamic and topical look at child health, growth and development enabling students to:

  • Be aware of patterns of child health, growth and development in the early years and be well informed about recent research in child development.
  • Understand the complex, inter-related issues that affect child development: socio-economic factors, health provision, education services and strategies, social policies, the law, culture and ethnicity and individual biological inheritances.
  • Be aware of strategies for prevention of health problems in children.
  • Understand the health and development needs of children who have ongoing special needs or who are disadvantaged.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Be able to access and critically appraise information on the health of children.
  • Show an understanding of the normal patterns of child growth, health and development and common conditions and circumstances affecting them.
  • Be familiar with the normal process of child health surveillance and its importance in promoting child health and development.
  • Understand some of the causes of childhood disability and its impact on the child and family.
  • Be aware of the impacts of the environment on children’s health and the impact of health on the subsequent development, education and well-being of children.
  • Be aware of the factors that lead to inequalities in children’s health.
