Many organisations are attempting to transform themselves into learning organisations in order to respond better to environmental change. Writers on organisational learning such as Peter Senge, probably the best known, suggest that the learning organisation is an aspirational state rather than a reality. The learning organisation involves collaborative effort from all staff to develop and share knowledge, but there are many blocks to such processes becoming embedded in practice. This module will look at the politics and daily reality of organisational learning. We will also consider the importance of a systems approach to organisations and decision making. Finally, we will consider the highly important area of group (as opposed to individual) learning, and will explore why this is so difficult to accomplish.
