This unit examines Bristish imperial activity in an oft-neglected region, drawing on new theoretical approaches. Students will examine both Latin American and British sources to explore constraints upon sovereignty. A wide range of source materrials will be used: from economic statistics to novels, community studies and diplomatic correspodence.
