Description including Unit Aims

This unit concentrates equally on all elements of language learning - listening, speaking, writing and reading as well as translation. The main focus will be development of active and passive language skills. In the first teaching block, through basic weekly topics, students will develop an extensive vocabulary and understanding of the main grammatical structures, in particular the case endings for nouns and adjectives, the system of tenses and the use of numerals. In the seond teaching block, four basic topics chosen by students and presentation of news from the Czech Republic will be used to develop further students' language skills as well as their knowlege of the Czech society.

Aims:

This unit will practice and develop students oral, aural, reading, writing and translation skills. The unit will provide students with good understanding of basic Czech grammar and cultural background.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to produce Czech accurately and fluently in range of social situations.

They will be able to work with authentic material, both written and aural, and retrieve necessary information. They will be equipped to continue to develop their Czech independently.

Teaching Information

Three hours weekly; though pattern will vary, generally two hours spent on work with texts, vocabulary and grammar and one hour on oral/aural activities. Students will be given written homework for each week, in addition to other preparation.

Assessment Information

3-hour written examination, consisting of grammar exercise; translation from and into Czech and an essay - 60%. Oral/aural exam - 25%. Class test (end of TB1)  15%.
