After sketching the historical background to Vatican II, an introduction will be given to key documents to identify various influences upon them and to evaluate their importance for later theological development. The unit will explore aspects of the theology of major theologians who influenced the Council including a consideration of how far Newman&s theology may have played a part or anticipated some themes. A particular study will be made of figures such as Kng, Rahner, de Lubac, Congar, Suenens, Schillebeeckx, von Balthasar, Ratzinger and John Paul II. The response of Protestant theologians will be considered particularly in the light of subsequent ecumenical dialogues. Students will be encouraged to relate the work of these theologians and the Council documents to contemporary issues such as the status of women, inter-faith dialogue, collaborative ministry, the role of the laity, faith and reason, and ecclesiology within the contemporary post-modern context.
