Companion animal science is one of three professional examinations in the final BVSc and consists of sixteen elements. These formal taught elements are undertaken in the 3rd and 4th years. They are complemented by practicals, DSE sessions, clerking rotations and electives, the latter two beginning in the summer of the fourth year and running through the final year. There are 2 x two hour written examinations covering theoretical aspects of CAS I at the beginning of the summer term of the forth year. Continuation of clerking is dependent upon passing the written examinations (pass mark = 50%). These marks are carried forward to the final CAS examination (30% final total). Clerking contributes 30% to the final total and students are required to pass in 75% clerking rotations.
