Description including Unit Aims

The unit develops a range of transferable skills, cognitive skills, research skills and personal development.

This Unit aims to develop the students':

  • Transferable skills (written, verbal, ICT, time management, problem solving)
  • Research skills (experimental design, statistical analysis)
  • Personal development
  • Cognitive skills

Intended Learning Outcomes

1. Students will be able to:

i) analyse, synthesise and summarise information critically.

ii) apply knowledge and understanding to address industry problems.

iii) apply critical thinking to published information

iv) use word processing, graphics, spreadsheet, electronic mail, electronic databases, electronic journal and the worldwide web

v) make oral presentations and produce good quality visual aids

vi) understand the principles involved in designing experiments and analysing experimental data

Teaching Information

From 2010/11 the unit will be taught in two formats:

  1. Residence based.
  2. e-learning. Teaching materials will be hosted on a web-based platform (Blackboard) which will include interactive questions and a discussion forum.

Assessment Information

Core skills are assessed entirely by coursework (essays, oral presentations, visit reports and practicals).
