Deaf Education has existed in Britain for over 200 years, yet deaf children's educational achievement has not been as great as some would hope. This unit considers the historical changes in deaf education, particularly the evolution of different teaching methodologies. The unit will consider deaf education in a wider context, considering both the involvement of the deaf community and of the family. Procedures such as Statementing will be examined in the light of recent legislation. The field of BSL/English Bilingual education policies will be explored with reference to recent research.
