This Unit is taught in year 1 of the BDS Programme. Students will learn that biochemistry is concerned with the chemical basis of normal biological structure and function and is essential for the understanding of living processes in health and disease. They will be shown that fundamental events in biology involve molecular change, and given practical experience in laboratory techniques and training in the interpretation of results, calculation and the use of scientific units. Students will be provided with a scientific foundation for dentistry as well as an awareness of how science advances biomedical knowledge. The importance of biochemistry in advancing study of both the normal and the diseased states will be demonstrated. Teaching is delivered by lectures, practical laboratory classes, computer-aided learning, discussion classes and tutorials. Assessments are by essays, short notes, numerical problems and oral presentations.
