Special study elements (SSEs) were introduced several years ago in line with current thinking that students on professional courses should be given the opportunity to broaden their intellectual horizons. At present they have a choice of: (1) undertaking a small research project in any relevant dental field; (2) taking a course in French, German, Spanish or Italian at the Language Centre; or (3) taking a British Sign Language course at the Access Unit. The time allocated on the timetable is 102 hours (2-5 pm on each Thursday and Friday in weeks 4 to 20 of the session). Students are expected to dedicate this time to all aspects of projects, attending and preparing for language classes and oral presentations, revision, etc.
