Description including Unit Aims

This unit is designed to provide a number of the generic (core) learning outcomes required for accreditation of engineering programmes under the new UK-SPEC. Specifically, it will explore the interrelationship between engineering processes and the wider context, within which they operate, including sustainability, legal, health, safety, risk and ethical issues. The unit will cover the principles of how engineering activities can promote sustainable development, with examples in typical areas such as energy and transport. The overall framework of legal requirements governing engineering activities will also be examined, including contract law and legal aspects of health, safety and environment. Issues concerning professional and product liability will also be explored together with ethical aspects.
