Description including Unit Aims

This unit will look at important texts and issues from the medieval period, and contemporary currents in research on the Middle Ages. The unit includes sessions on some Middle English texts, but focuses more widely on influential texts and movements that influenced Middle English writers. Students are encouraged not only to engage with a range of interdisciplinary topics but to reflect on the research practices of a wide range of senior mediaevalist scholars, both those based in Bristol and a range of distinguished visitors. Teaching will be by a mix of attendance at research seminars where students prepare in advance to participate in debate, recording their reflections on the speaker's paper, and attendance at student-led seminars, where they make the presentations and lead debate.
