The unit will focus on major literary texts of twentieth century Spain. Students will study the work of a range of writers in order to consolidate their engagement with modern Spanish literary culture. Texts will be studied in relation to the history of modern Spain and to questions of Spanish national identity. The unit will aim to give students an advanced understanding of modern Spanish literature and enhance their ability to identify and engage critically with formal and contextual aspects of literary study.
Students will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of modern Spanish literary culture. They will be able to analyse texts from both a formal and historical perspective drawing on appropriate secondary material to demonstrate their engagement with relevant critical sources. They will develop advanced skills of literary analysis including close analytical reading
The unit will be delivered through a mixture of staff and student led seminars.
3000-word essay plus 2-hour) exam (33%/67%) The exam is intended to essay the student’s breadth of knowledge and ability to express succinctly key concepts explored on the unit. The essay will allow the student to reflect more deeply on a chosen topic analysing set texts in depth and selecting and deploying relevant critical material.
