This unit coveres a selection of topics in Medical Law. It deals with issues central to the relationships at the heart of medical law: between doctor and patient and between medicine and the state. In particular it will explore the key concepts of autonomy, accountability and trust. The focus will be on English law, although a comparative aspect will be introduced in places. Topics covered include: What is Medical law?; Consent to Treatment; Confidentiality and Access to Medical Records; Regulation of the medical profession; Dealing with medical error; Medical Negligence; Prosecuting doctors and hospitals; Inquests and Inquiries into Medical mishaps; Medical law at the beginning of life; Body parts and the law; Medical law at the end of life.
