Description including Unit Aims

This unit explores participatory and creative research methods and methodologies for working within the interpretive and critical research paradigms with children, young people and families. There will be an emphasis on ethical working with vulnerable and very young participants and how we ensure the participation and the voices of our least heard members of society are heard through research. It is intended that a range of participatory and creative methods be explored through workshop activities and based upon active researchers contemporary project experiences working with children and families across a range of project foci and diverse research groups. Drawn from methodologies in performance ethnography and participatory action research, methods may include those in performance arts, creative arts, photography, narratives, diaries, Delphi and problem based workshops, child conferencing and focus groups. How such methods can be used for data collection and presentation will be explored; and issues of quality and validity.
